Did You
Know?
Braking systems are one of the
most underrated un-maintained systems in your ride, but it is one of the most
important systems on any street or classic ride. Often mistakenly overlooked or set as a low
priority when compared to that screaming heartbeat under the hood, curve
hugging suspensions, or glass finished body.
Think about, what good is all that power if you can’t stop it? No matter how good your suspension, you’ll
need the brakes when negotiating those curves. A glass finished body does not
hold up well when you miss the curve or can’t slow down for the guy stopped in
front of you. Upgrading and maintaining
your braking system is easily one of the best improvements and maintenance
values; both dollar wise and safety wise you can do to your ride.
All improvements from
upgrading the standard drum brakes to disc brakes, single reservoir master
cylinder to dual reservoir master cylinder, manual to power brakes will
increase drivability and safety. In
today’s world upgrades can be performed using refurbished OEM parts,
aftermarket upgrade kits or combinations of the two.
Maintenance wise fluid levels
should be checked regularly. Much the
like your car’s cooling system, the brake system usually deteriorates from the
inside out. Most brake fluids attract
and hold moisture. Unless the car is
driven frequently, the brake system never heats up enough to evaporate the
moisture and before you know it hard brake lines, wheel cylinders, and calipers
are leaking or non-functional due to corrosion.
